Shocking confession: Model-turned-actress Jang Yoon-ju laid bare the complex emotions and scars she faced when she debuted as a teen model — revealing the hidden reality behind the glamorous image, from constant rejection to pressure-filled choices far beyond her years.

Recently on her YouTube channel, Jang looked back on how she first entered modeling nearly 30 years ago. Recalling a memory from middle school, she said, "I lifted my skirt to be punished, and my teacher looked at my legs and said, 'You have great legs. If you grow taller, you'll be a model.'" From that day on, her nickname became "model," and her dream naturally took shape.

Jang began training in earnest in her third year of middle school, taking runway-walking lessons for over two and a half years while dreaming of debuting. But reality was brutal. "I auditioned for collections several times a year and went to commercial and catalog meetings, but I kept getting rejected," she shared. "People around me kept saying, 'You're not ready yet,' 'You shouldn't debut now.'" Her height seemed to have stalled, and watching her friends debut before her was enough to shatter her self-esteem.

On the verge of quitting, Jang turned to fitness. She committed to daily swimming and weight training to build balance and tone — and, most importantly, to regain her confidence. Soon, her audition results started to change. In 1997, at just 18, she finally stepped onto the runway and made her debut.

But another unexpected wall awaited her after debut. "Even though I was young, I kept getting offers for more revealing shoots because I had more curves than other models," she admitted. "They weren't full nudes, but I was often asked to undress. There were definitely moments that were uncomfortable and that I didn't want to do." The compliment of having a "beautiful body" became a rationale that narrowed her freedom to choose.

Senior models watching from the sidelines voiced concern, asking, "Why do you keep doing these undressing shoots?" and warning, "You're still far too young." Jang said, "I understood where they were coming from, but at the same time, I wondered if a model couldn't also be presented confidently like a piece of art."

She also pointed out the difference between overseas and domestic attitudes. "Abroad, that realm is seen as a relatively free form of performance, but the gaze is different in Korea," she said. "Even so, I felt the seniors' words weren't meant to hurt me — they were trying to protect me."

Her confession isn't just a trip down memory lane — it reopens the conversation about the choices and boundaries young talents shoulder while chasing a dream. Behind the dazzling runway was a teenager figuring out how to protect herself, and her story now serves as a message to those walking the same path.
