Disney+ has locked in a 2027 release for its original series Koreans, and the buzz is already building.
Koreans reimagines FX’s flagship series The Americans through a distinctly Korean lens. The original The Americans ran for six seasons, won Best Television Series – Drama at the 76th Golden Globes, ranked No. 8 on the BBC’s 100 Greatest TV Series of the 21st Century, and holds a 96% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes—earning acclaim from both critics and general audiences.
Set in a 1990s Seoul apartment complex, the series blends high-stakes espionage with raw human conflict and emotion. Beyond the edge-of-your-seat spy narrative, it centers on characters torn between family and conviction.
The star-studded cast is already turning heads. Lee Byung-hun leads as Kim Myung-jun, an elite North Korean spy who hides his identity and settles in South Korea, while Han Ji-min plays his undercover “wife,” Yoon Hwa-kyung, delivering a finely tuned emotional performance. Joining them is Lee Hee-jun as Cha Ki-seok, a former violent-crimes detective now with the security investigation unit who moves in next door—tightening the web of tension.
The creative team only amps up expectations. Director Ahn Gil-ho, acclaimed for The Glory and Stranger, takes the helm, with screenwriter Park Eun-kyo—known for Mother and The Silent Sea—penning the script to ensure top-tier quality.
With a powerhouse original, top-tier cast, and elite creators coming together, Disney+ is teasing another well-made hit. Koreans will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2027.
