tvN’s upcoming community debate variety show Keomyu Daejeon Ikmyeong Toronhoe (hereafter "Keomyu Daejeon") has entered a full-scale overhaul.
Recently, tvN announced on its official website, "'Keomyu Daejeon' will undergo an overall restructuring," adding, "We will provide another update once the new direction is finalized." The previously posted participant recruitment notice and related social media posts have been deleted. The pivot comes just days after the show’s initial launch announcement.
'Keomyu Daejeon' was planned as a program where online community users wear masks and join debates anonymously. Representatives of each community would appear to voice opinions and engage in real-time, chat-style clashes — a unique setup touted by the producers. They introduced it as "a grand anonymous debate among users from Korea’s leading communities," promoting a clearly differentiated format.
The recruitment notice directly named major Korean communities such as DC Inside, Bobaedream, Women’s Generation, FM Korea, Instiz, and Theqoo, drawing intense attention. Applicant criteria emphasized users fluent in various memes and those with extensive community activity, underlining the show’s concept.
But controversy erupted immediately after the launch plan went public. While some praised the attempt to bring community culture to broadcast TV, critics warned that an anonymity-based debate structure could amplify extreme expressions and hate speech. Others pointed out that pitting users from communities with different leanings against each other might inflame conflict.
There were also doubts about having a single individual represent an entire community. Since online communities host a wide spectrum of opinions, critics argued that remarks by a few participants could be misread as the community’s overall stance.
Facing a sharply divided online reaction, tvN chose a sweeping overhaul instead of pushing ahead as-is. All eyes are on how the producers will revise the format and address the flashpoint issues.
