Actor Moon Geun Young returned to the stage for the first time in nine years—and the audience erupted in thunderous applause.

On March 13, Moon kicked off the first performance of the play Orphan, taking the lead as Treat and marking a triumphant comeback. Anticipation was high even before opening night, and her deepened, commanding performance dominated the stage and drew rave reviews.

Written by American playwright Lyle Kessler, Orphan follows middle-aged gangster Harold and orphaned brothers Treat and Philip as they begin living together, heal old wounds, and slowly become a family. Treat, played by Moon, is rough and confrontational in his drive to protect his younger brother, yet beneath the surface lies a complex mix of deprivation and fierce responsibility.

On stage, Moon moved effortlessly between raw charisma and disarming innocence, capturing the character’s layered inner life with delicate precision. Her chemistry with Kim Dan-i, who plays Philip, balanced taut tension with sly humor, while scenes with Yang So-min as Harold traced a gradual thaw with gripping intensity that pulled the audience all the way in.

After the curtain call, Moon shared, "I was anxious to be back on stage after so long, but thanks to the audience, we wrapped the performance safely. Since this is just the beginning, I’ll give it my all through the very last show."

You can catch Moon Geun Young’s bold transformation in Orphan at Daehakro TOM Theater through May 31.
