‘Wanggwa Saneun Namja’ Surpasses 13.46 Million — Biggest Korean Box-Office Hit Since the Pandemic

The film Wanggwa Saneun Namja is rewriting Korean cinema history in the post-pandemic era.

According to the Korean box office information system on the 16th, Wanggwa Saneun Namja (hereafter ‘Wangsanam’) drew a cumulative 13,467,838 moviegoers as of the 40th day of release (March 15), becoming the most-watched Korean film since the pandemic.

Set in 1457, the story follows a village head who chooses exile to revive his town and a young former king forced off the throne, powered by standout performances from Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon. Riding a ‘Wangsanam’ craze that spans generations, the film added 1,253,758 viewers over the weekend and held the No. 1 spot at the box office.

‘Wangsanam’ has overtaken Veteran (13.41 million) to climb to No. 7 on the all-time box office chart, joining the ranks of The Admiral: Roaring Currents, Extreme Job, Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, Ode to My Father, Avengers: Endgame, Frozen II as one of the biggest hits ever.
