A new K-Drama is trending for its smart character callbacks and hidden Easter eggs that nod to the cast’s past roles.

In episode 2 of the SBS drama Phantom Lawyer (hereafter ‘Phantom Lawyer’), which aired on March 14, viewers spotted playful, well-placed details throughout the story. Scenes that subtly evoke the actors’ signature characters delivered an extra layer of fun amid the high-stakes plot — sparking buzz and comments like, “Did you catch that? Genius!”

In this episode, Yoo Yeon-seok’s character, Shin Yi-rang, races to secure decisive evidence to clear the name of the wrongfully deceased Lee Kang-pung. Believing the main hospital IT system’s EMR hard drive holds the truth, Shin says it could overturn the doctor’s claim that Lee “died of cardiac arrest during surgery.” Hearing this, Lee Kang-pung gushes, “Attorney, that’s so romantic,” and “Did you graduate med school too? How wise!” — tongue-in-cheek lines that instantly remind viewers of Yoo’s roles in Dr. Romantic and Hospital Playlist, drawing laughs.

Esom also dropped a surprise callback to one of her most iconic characters. Disguising herself as a prosecutor to sneak into a storage room where evidence is hidden, Esom’s character Han Na-hyun flashes a fake ID bearing the name “Prosecutor Kang Ha-na.” The wink to SBS’s Taxi Driver — where Esom played Prosecutor Kang Ha-na — plus her signature perm hairstyle thrilled fans. Viewers reacted, “That felt like a legendary cameo,” and “I’ve missed Prosecutor Kang Ha-na!”

The production team described the parodies as “a loving homage to the actors,” adding, “We designed these touches so viewers could find little moments of fun even in the urgency of the case.” They continued, “We’ll keep the show’s sincerity intact while breathing with viewers through a variety of entertaining elements. Please look forward to the exploits of our ‘possessed’ attorney, Shin Yi-rang.”

Meanwhile, ‘Phantom Lawyer’ airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 p.m. KST.
