Yuna Kim is back in the spotlight—this time, on a ballet stage.

On April 6, Google Korea released a campaign video titled ‘Our Queen is Back,’ along with performance and behind-the-scenes clips showing Kim reinterpret her iconic short program Danse Macabre through ballet. The project was directed by Shin Woo-seok of Dolphin Kidnapping, with Google’s generative AI Gemini used throughout the production.

In the video, Kim delivers a restrained yet expressive performance, showcasing balance and control honed from years on the ice. Even after more than a decade since her retirement, her precision and physical form quickly drew attention from viewers.

One notable moment features ballerina Kang Sue-jin watching from the audience, highlighting the collaboration’s artistic direction.

Speaking about the performance, Kim said, “I did figure skating for nearly 20 years, but 12 years after retiring, I think my body is now pretty much that of an ordinary person.” She added that stepping into ballet came with pressure, but hoped the effort would remind audiences of her competitive years.

Her comment about being “ordinary” sparked widespread reactions online. Many viewers expressed disbelief, while others praised her continued discipline and presence.

Beyond the performance itself, the project also explored the use of AI in creative production. Technology supported various stages of the process—from planning choreography to visual direction—while experts contributed to refining the final output. Kang Sue-jin also participated in reviewing choreography, and Kim incorporated AI-assisted feedback during rehearsals.

Kim, who retired from figure skating in 2014, married Forestella member Ko Woo-rim in 2022.
