Hyun Bin is stepping into a new role—this time tied to national security awareness.

On April 7, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) announced his appointment as an Honorary Counterintelligence Agent, aimed at helping the public better understand the role and importance of counterintelligence.

The NIS explained that the scope of counterintelligence has expanded beyond traditional perceptions of identifying North Korean spies. It now includes broader threats such as technology leaks, defense-industry data theft, and cyberattacks involving foreign actors.

In this role, Hyun Bin will participate in public-awareness campaigns highlighting these evolving risks. Interest in the appointment is heightened by his previous portrayal of an NIS officer in the 2023 film The Point Men.

An NIS official stated that incidents threatening national security are increasing, emphasizing the need to strengthen public understanding alongside institutional response.

Hyun Bin debuted in 2003 and married actress Son Ye-jin in 2022. He is also preparing for the release of Made in Korea 2 following his appearance in the first season last year.
