Actor Park Gun-hyung captivated viewers as he unveiled a movie-like love story—from the Paris proposal he planned for his wife, who is 11 years younger, to their once-in-a-lifetime wedding.
On the April 8 broadcast of MBC’s variety show Radio Star, Kim Su-ro, Uhm Ki-joon, Park Gun-hyung, and Kim Hyung-mook appeared and shared a range of stories.
On the show, Park opened up about the behind-the-scenes of their relationship and marriage. He drew attention when he revealed that planning was even tougher because his wife dislikes “events.” Park said, “My wife hates events, so I agonized over what to do,” adding, “Friends told me to keep it simple, and when I heard she was in Paris with her mother, I decided to go find her myself.”
At the time, while filming MBC’s variety show Real Men, Park carved out a two-day leave and chose a whirlwind 1-night, 2-day round trip to France. He hurriedly prepared a banner and boarded the plane. “I had no time and it was hard to reach anyone, so I had to plan everything down to the last detail,” he recalled.
The proposal was a tightly guarded secret mission. He hired a local snap photographer as his point of contact and informed his future mother-in-law in advance. With help from a friend living in Paris and the cooperation of local bystanders, the large-scale event came together.
The pivotal moment played out on a sightseeing boat near Notre-Dame Cathedral. Slinging a guitar over his shoulder, Park appeared, sang, and dropped to one knee to propose. Caught completely off guard, his wife was so stunned and moved that she momentarily dropped into a squat. “Since I showed up out of nowhere, she must have been really shocked,” Park recalled.
The love story continued into the wedding. “I wanted to make sure my wife would never envy anyone else’s wedding,” Park said, explaining why he planned something special. In reality, his wedding turned into a star-studded affair as his musical theater colleagues showed up in full force, making it more spectacular than most.
Meanwhile, Park Gun-hyung married his wife in 2014 and is now a father of two while remaining active across multiple fields. His wife previously worked at a major corporation and is currently involved in producing stand-up comedy.
