Designer Lee Jung-woo — widely known as Jun Ji-hyun’s mother-in-law — directly addressed the growing controversy over her BTS-related remarks on March 23, declaring there was “no intent to disparage” and identifying herself as a “10-year ARMY.”

On the 23rd, Lee posted a lengthy message on her Instagram to clarify a recent viral post. “In this country, is it impossible for a celebrity’s family to even be a fan in peace?” she wrote, voicing her frustration. She added, “I’m just an ordinary person who retired long ago — simply one among many,” expressing the burden of excessive attention.

The controversy began with an earlier post where Lee mentioned BTS’s Gwanghwamun comeback performance and their new album. She heaped praise on the show and the music, calling it “a highly polished album you end up listening to without skipping a single track.” She also highlighted the members’ hard work and teamwork, stressing she’s been a longtime fan.

However, her phrase about “a leader who speaks English and members who still can’t speak English even after 10 years” was interpreted by some as a disparaging remark, fueling backlash.

Lee countered that she was referencing something “the members joked about during a live” and that she posted it while laughing. “Why would a 10-year fan criticize the artists they support?” she asked, adding, “I’m neither in a position to evaluate their English skills nor did I have any such intent.”

Meanwhile, on the 21st, BTS held a comeback live at Gwanghwamun in Seoul, signaling their return to activities after about three years and nine months.
