Aiming for release next year, the film Excommunication (working title, directed by Kim Sun-kyung) has confirmed Byun Yo-han, Esom, Kim Jun-han, and Kim Jong-su in the cast and will begin filming in April.
Production company Star Platinum and distributor BY4M Studio announced on the 1st that Excommunication will relentlessly probe the traditional patriarchal order and the power structure within a family, delicately portraying the tension and fractures between its characters. The story follows the Yedong Kwon clan, which has long run a dangerous illegal enterprise. After the clan’s firstborn heir dies, an uncontrollable ripple erupts over who will take the throne.
Byun Yo-han plays Park Ki-tae, who has long handled the family’s dirty work. After Kwon Do-young’s (played by Kim Jun-han) father passes away, he takes the lead to ensure Do-young fully inherits the position of successor. Known for steadily building a distinctive acting style across diverse projects, Byun is expected to turn Park Ki-tae into a compelling character.
Esom plays the eldest daughter, Kwon So-hyun, who moved to Seoul to escape the dangerous family trade. Returning after years away, she quickly senses the clan’s shifting atmosphere and finds herself thrust into the heart of an unpredictable succession battle. Having tackled a wide range of genres and personas, Esom is set to deliver a grounded performance befitting the eldest daughter of an old, prestigious family in Excommunication.
Kim Jun-han appears as Kwon Do-young, the clan’s firstborn grandson, while Kim Jong-su joins as the ambitious uncle Kwon Byung-ryeol, who covets the heir’s seat and exudes a menacing charisma toward his nephews.
Notably, Byun Yo-han—who recently registered his marriage to Tiffany Young—has drawn even more attention as news of the film’s start-of-production indirectly revealed the reason behind his shaved head. Excommunication is slated for a 2027 release.
