Actor Park Hae-soo directly addressed how his role differs from Song Kang-ho’s character in Memories of Murder.
On the 13th, ENA held the press conference for its new Monday–Tuesday drama Scarecrow. Director Park Joon-woo, along with actors Park Hae-soo, Lee Hee-joon, and Kwak Sun-young, attended the event.
In the series, Park plays ace detective Kang Tae-joo, armed with relentless observation and razor-sharp instincts. Because the story tackles a serial murder case, Detective Kang naturally evokes Park Doo-man (played by Song Kang-ho) from the film Memories of Murder.
Addressing the comparison, Park said, “Memories of Murder is a story set before the culprit was caught, while Scarecrow was created after the real killer was identified, so the characters don’t overlap.” He continued, “Since Memories of Murder is a masterpiece, I studied it a lot. I tried to learn not only from senior Song Kang-ho’s performance but also from many other aspects.” He added, “Rather than feeling pressured, I approached it as a student. There was so much I had to accomplish in the drama itself that I focused on that.”
Scarecrow is set against the Lee Chun-jae serial murder case that inspired the 2003 film Memories of Murder. It’s a crime-investigation thriller about a detective hunting the true culprit who is forced into an unavoidable collaboration with the very person he despises. Spanning three decades from 1988 to 2019, it will tightly portray two men, bound by ill fate and hatred, in a fierce pursuit of the truth.
Meanwhile, promising next-level suspense through meticulous direction and a cast viewers trust, Scarecrow will premiere on the 20th at 10 p.m.
