A large cafe located in Seogwipo, Jeju is embroiled in controversy over allegations of illegally occupying public land measuring approximately 1,800 pyeong (6,000 square meters). This cafe was once known as a "celebrity cafe" associated with Baekga from the K-pop group Koyote, and it became popular among tourists as a hot spot.

According to a report by KBS on the 6th, a field inspection by Seogwipo City confirmed that besides the building, the cafe had illegally converted surrounding land into walking paths, sculptures, parking lots, and grassy areas. The city has referred the matter to the local police for investigation and plans to issue a restoration order based on the findings.

The controversy intensified as speculation spread online, suggesting that "this is Baekga's establishment" based on the cafe’s appearance and location. Previously, in a variety show aired in 2022, Baekga mentioned, "I opened a cafe in Jeju" and "I personally took care of the interior design." He also posted photos of the cafe space on social media, leading to it being colloquially referred to as 'Baekga Cafe'.

In response, Cafe's representative, Mr. A, stated on the 7th to multiple media outlets, "Currently, there is no connection with Mr. Baekga," while acknowledging, "The illegal land conversion is indeed our fault, but a police investigation must proceed first." Mr. A explained, "We realized the illegal conversion fact late and intended to rectify it, but it was delayed due to financial reasons." He added, "It is true that Baekga participated in the interior design contract for a time, but the contract ended last April."

However, some argue that since Baekga promoted the cafe as if he operated it via broadcasts and social media, it raises moral responsibility regarding contributing to the brand image.

Meanwhile, Seogwipo City plans to take administrative action after determining the area of illegal occupancy and restoration plan based on the local police investigation results.
