Actor Lee Yi-kyung has been thrust back into the spotlight after tax authorities issued an additional assessment tied to his one-person agency — reigniting controversy following last year’s private life scandal and sparking intense public scrutiny.
His label, Sangyoung ENT, apologized in an official statement, saying, "We are sorry for causing concern over this matter." Addressing the allegations, the company drew a firm line: "This was not intentional tax evasion or income omission." The agency added, "Since debut, Lee Yi-kyung has faithfully fulfilled his tax obligations. During the recent tax audit, he transparently submitted relevant documents and fully cooperated with the investigation."
The key dispute centers on expense and revenue recognition standards within a one-person corporation. Sangyoung ENT argued, "This assessment stems from a difference in tax law interpretation regarding corporate revenue and expense treatment." The agency continued, "We respect the tax authorities’ judgment and will pay the assessed amount in accordance with the proper procedures," adding, "We will also conduct a more rigorous review of our tax and accounting controls to prevent any recurrence."
Reports indicate the National Tax Service concluded that, in connection with Lee’s one-person agency, part of his personal income was treated as corporate revenue, effectively reducing his tax burden. Similar tax disputes involving celebrities’ single-person corporations have recently drawn heightened public attention.
The backlash is amplified by Lee’s long-cultivated friendly, down-to-earth image on variety shows and broadcasts. Because he’s been loved for his bright, playful persona, each controversy hits his public image harder. Coupled with lingering fallout from last year’s private life issue, the added tax dispute has intensified the pressure.
To be clear, authorities have not concluded that this was willful tax evasion. The agency has consistently maintained, "There was no intentional underreporting." Still, regardless of any future legal ruling, public expectations for celebrities’ integrity and accountability remain high — and sentiment may not shift easily.
