A big-budget historical drama has been officially invited to the Cannes International Series Festival, instantly emerging as a buzzy global must-watch. The selection underscores how the K-style sageuk genre is expanding and proving its worldwide competitiveness.
JTBC’s new drama 신의 구슬 has been invited to the non-competitive Rendez-vous (RENDEZ-VOUS) section of the 9th Cannes International Series Festival and will make its world premiere there. Notably, actors Ahn Bo-hyun and Soo-hyun will attend in person, meeting global fans on the pink carpet and through GV sessions.
Set in 1258 CE as the war with the Mongols drags into its 30th year and defeat looms, the story follows a convoy that heads to the battlefield to retrieve the nation’s sacred relic, the Gwaneum Boju (Avalokitesvara sacred marble), and a princess who risks everything to save them.
As the invitation news broke, netizens reacted: “Now we can gauge the response even before year-end,” “I’m curious whether a Goryeo-era setting will resonate overseas,” and more.
Meanwhile, the Cannes International Series Festival will be held in Cannes, France, from the 23rd to the 28th.
