Actors IU and Byeon Woo-seok are poised to take over living rooms with a drama that boldly imagines a 21st-century constitutional monarchy in Korea.
Just three days before its premiere, MBC’s new Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown tells a status-smashing romance born from a contract marriage between Seong Hee-ju (played by IU) — a chaebol heiress and CEO who has everything but is still considered a commoner — and Grand Prince Ian (played by Byeon Woo-seok), the king’s son who, despite his noble birth, is fated to have nothing. Their pairing is already drawing massive attention: in the performer buzz rankings released by industry tracker Good Data Corporation’s FUNdex, IU and Byeon Woo-seok placed first and second, proving their popularity.
The series stands out with its distinctive premise: a modern-day Korea where the royal family still exists. Seong Hee-ju, the head of Castle Beauty, has it all yet hits a ceiling due to her background, while Grand Prince Ian bears the fate of a royal who can never be king. To beat the system, they choose a contract marriage — a setup that promises a fresh, addictive storyline.
The drama also fuels anticipation with layered relationships. Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo (played by Noh Sang-hyun) undergoes subtle shifts with both Seong Hee-ju and Grand Prince Ian as the contract marriage unfolds, while Queen Dowager Yoon I-rang (played by Gong Seung-yeon) clashes with Grand Prince Ian, raising the stakes. Seong Hee-ju’s chief secretary Do Hye-jung (played by Lee Yeon) and Grand Prince Ian’s aide Choi Hyeon (played by Yoo Soo-bin) build their own dynamics, enriching the narrative.
Backed by its fresh world-building and the leads’ explosive synergy, Perfect Crown premieres Friday the 10th at 9:40 p.m. on MBC.
