Actor Byun Woo-seok has issued a personal apology over the growing historical distortion controversy surrounding MBC drama Perfect Crown.
On the 18th, Byun posted on his Instagram, "Over the weekend, I worried that my words might cause further harm. I write with a heavy heart to those who felt discomfort and concern because of the project," opening his statement.
Byun acknowledged that he failed to fully consider the historical context and meaning while filming and acting. He said, "I lacked sufficient reflection on what historical context and meaning the project contains and how it could be received by viewers," adding, "Through viewers' feedback, I have engaged in reflection and self-examination." He emphasized, "As an actor, I was reminded once again that I must look more responsibly not only at my performance but also at the message and context of the work."
He concluded by saying, "I am sincerely sorry," bowing his head in apology. He added, "I am grateful to everyone who cared for and advised 'Perfect Crown' and Grand Prince Ian. I will approach future projects with far greater caution and depth as an actor."
Meanwhile, Perfect Crown, which ended on the 16th, sparked major backlash until the very end over various historically inaccurate settings.
