The first half of 2026 in Korean entertainment sizzled with celebratory news over controversy. Wedding and baby announcements poured in, and BTS ended their military hiatus to make a blockbuster full-group comeback that shook the world. Breakout stars emerged, and Korean films scored big at the box office. Ahead of the second half, here are the K-snapp stories that set the internet ablaze. [Editor’s note]

K-pop kicked off 2026 with a barrage of long-awaited comebacks. From undisputed global titans BTS and BLACKPINK returning in full formation, to new releases from aespa and LE SSERAFIM, listeners were spoiled like never before.

Rookies refused to be outshined. KiiiKiii and CORTIS stormed music charts and social media with ‘404 (New Era)’ and ‘REDRED’. Their addictive hooks and on-trend concepts were impossible to escape. Add RESCENE’s ‘LOVE ATTACK’, which rocketed back up the charts thanks to YouTube virality, and the first half proved just how magnetic newer idols can be.

With every member completing military service, BTS dropped their 5th studio album ‘ARIRANG’ on March 20 across major platforms, marking their first full-group release in about 3 years and 9 months since the June 2022 anthology ‘Proof’. Anticipation was sky-high even before release.

The very next day, on the 21st, they staged ‘BTS Comeback Live: ARIRANG’ around the Gwanghwamun area, grabbing massive attention. It became Netflix’s first-ever global live broadcast across more than 190 countries, drawing 18.4 million viewers in a single day and proving BTS’s unwavering dominance. Album sales smashed records too: ‘ARIRANG’ logged 4,169,464 first-week copies, a new career high. BTS also pulled off the rare double, topping both the Billboard 200 with ‘ARIRANG’ and the Hot 100 with the title track ‘SWIM’. Momentum is already building for potential wins at the American Music Awards and the GRAMMYs.

BLACKPINK’s full-group return was equally viral. After thriving in their individual lanes, the members reunited in February with their 3rd mini album ‘DEADLINE’. The release debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, marking the group’s fifth entry on the chart, and soared to No. 11 on the UK Official Albums Top 100, underscoring their world-class pull.

While BTS lit up Gwanghwamun with a live show, BLACKPINK announced their comeback with a landmark collaboration with the National Museum of Korea. It was the institution’s first large-scale partnership with a K-pop act, and after 3 years and 5 months, the quartet returned in seriously spectacular fashion.

aespa and LE SSERAFIM also powered the first-half lineup with their second studio albums. In May, aespa released ‘LEMONADE’, becoming eight-time million-sellers. The album entered the Billboard 200 at No. 9, their third Top 10, and they scored their first-ever entry on the UK Official Singles Chart, signaling strong global traction. Riding the momentum, aespa kicks off a new world tour this August at Seoul’s Gocheok Sky Dome, before heading to North and South America and Europe.

That same month, LE SSERAFIM dropped ‘PUREFLOW pt.1’, selling 435,675 copies on day one, the highest first-day tally among 4th-gen girl group albums this year. The record chronicles the group’s growth while confronting fear, evolving their original “fearless” theme into the message: “Because we know fear, we can become stronger.”

Rising acts KiiiKiii and CORTIS, who both debuted last year, made major noise. Returning in January, KiiiKiii hit No. 1 on the Melon Top 100 for the first time with the mini 2nd album ‘Delulu Pack’ title track ‘404 (New Era)’, and scored a triple crown on music shows, setting a new personal best. The release charted not only in Korea but also on China’s QQ Music and Japan’s Oricon, signaling growing overseas clout.

CORTIS has been enjoying a long-running hit with ‘REDRED’, the title track from their May mini 2nd album ‘GREENGREEN’. Fueled by its earworm melody and lyrics, ‘REDRED’ dominated social platforms and online communities, reaffirming CORTIS’s popularity. The song placed No. 2 on Melon’s June monthly chart released on the 1st, securing a Top 2 spot for the second straight month.

Lastly, RESCENE, who officially debuted in 2024, pulled off a belated breakout often dubbed a “small-agency miracle,” surging back up the charts. Member Woni’s personal YouTube channel birthed the viral ‘Geoje Yaho’ meme, which sparked renewed attention for hidden gems like ‘LOVE ATTACK’. Riding social buzz and word of mouth, the group’s momentum landed them back on Mnet’s ‘M Countdown’ stage.

The first half of 2026 spotlighted everything from global K-pop juggernauts to rookies who might be the scene’s next big chapter. Fans are watching to see just how far they will climb next.
