Shocking new records at the box office: Director Yeon Sang-ho’s latest—touted as one of the most anticipated films of the year—has blasted past 4 million admissions in the shortest time among 2024 releases.
According to KOBIS (the Korean Film Council’s box office system) on June 3, Colony has held the No. 1 spot for 14 straight days and has reached a cumulative 4,043,762 admissions. It’s the fastest pace among all domestic and international films released this year, proving its overwhelming box office firepower.
Colony is a suffocating thriller set inside a locked-down building after a mysterious outbreak, where isolated survivors wage a desperate fight against ever-evolving infected. In particular, Jun Ji-hyun chose it as her first big-screen project in 11 years, fueling syndrome-level buzz from the production stage. Add powerhouses Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Shin-rok, and Shin Hyun-bin, and the result is a flawless acting ensemble.
Viewers are raving about the massive on-site scale and razor-tight tension. On online communities and social media, moviegoers are reacting: "At this pace, we’re looking at another 10-million blockbuster," "Already on my Nth rewatch," and "I was so immersed it felt like I was getting sucked into the screen—best theater experience in ages."
Riding an unstoppable box office streak and breathing life back into a sluggish theater market, Colony opened on May 21 and is now playing nationwide.
Meanwhile, trailing titles include Wild Things, The Backrooms, Michael, and The Mysterious Candy Store Zenchantou. Wild Things, in which Kang Dong-won transforms into an idol, drew 160,758 moviegoers on opening day to debut at No. 2.
