Shocking buzz: the original musical that earned rave reviews at last year's reading showcase is finally set to open this August — and the star-studded casting for Sweet Blue Flowers is already going viral.
On the 23rd, production company Neverendingplay announced the opening of Sweet Blue Flowers and revealed its full cast lineup.
Sweet Blue Flowers held a reading showcase in 2025 and quickly became one of Neverendingplay's most anticipated titles of the year. Notably, director Park So-yeong — known for shepherding warmly resonant, high-quality works like the music play Chun Tae-il: A Flame That Lives On, the musical The Goddess is Watching, and Hadestown — joins the creative team, signaling the birth of a well-made original musical.
The story unfolds across two timelines — the present day and the Middle Ages. In the present, we follow Gretta, a girl living with her sister Olive and their parents on the island where the sun rises first on Earth. Believing the local legend that a blue coral grants wishes, Gretta sets off on a quest to find it on the island her sister left behind, carrying the novel 'Sweet Blue Flowers' her mother often read to her. In the medieval storyline, Heinrich, a young man on his first journey with a band of merchants, meets a "woman in the blue flower" in a dream and is swept up in the feelings of first love.
The two worlds connect through the device that the book Gretta reads features Heinrich as its protagonist. While the timelines never directly communicate, they mirror each other through symbols and metaphors. If Heinrich's tale is a first step into the world — a "sung poem" — Gretta's becomes a girl's urgent question to the adults, leaving a lingering resonance.
The lyrical message is backed by a dazzling cast. Gretta will be played by Choi Eun-yeong, Cho So-eun, and Kim So-yul, while Heinrich will be portrayed by Hyun Seok-jun, Yoon Eun-oh, and Kim Ri-hyeon. Park Ran-ju and Han Jae-a take on the dual roles of Olive (Gretta's sister) and Mathilde. Choi Ho-jung and Kim Ji-hoon play the Father, with Jung Yeon, Lee Ji-sook, and Han Bora as the Mother. Won Jong-hwan and Kim Dae-woong appear as the Merchants' Leader, anchoring the piece.
As soon as the lineup dropped, netizens reacted with explosive praise: "The casting is so good," "I feel like I'll be happy the entire time," and "You have to go, no matter what."
Building hype with a solid narrative and a powerhouse Daehakro cast, Sweet Blue Flowers runs from August 13 to October 25 at the Chungmu Art Center, Middle Theater Black.
