With Korean-style sci-fi surging—led by films like Hope—the theater scene is making waves with an original sci-fi musical set in a submerged Seoul in 2057, grabbing massive attention from would-be audiences.
On the 9th, producer MBZ Company, Inc. announced the opening of the musical DIVE and unveiled its cast. After last year’s reading showcase, the piece has been developed into a full-scale world-premiere production. Based on author Danyo’s debut novel 'Dive,' it won the Excellence Award in the Long-form category at the 12th SF Awards in 2025—earning early praise for its rock-solid storytelling.
Set in a future Seoul that’s largely underwater, the story kicks off when Seon-yul, a skilled diver from Nogosan, discovers Soo-ho, a machine-human whose memories have stalled. As they search for Soo-ho’s lost past, the characters push through grief and loss to grow, probing the line between humans and machines—and the true meaning of memory and existence.
A powerhouse creative team aims to elevate the production’s polish. Led by writer Kim Sol-ji, composer Min Chan-hong, and director Lee Gippeum, the trio promises to craft a striking new vision onstage.
The talent-packed cast is also fueling hype. Playing the machine-human Soo-ho are Park Sae-him, Park Joo-hyeok, and Jeong Ji-woo, while the diver Seon-yul will be portrayed by Ban Jeong-mo, Cho Young-hwa, and Lee Se-heon. Adding energy as Woo-chan are Lee Min-gyu, Yoo Dong-hoon, and Kwak Da-in. Geum Bo-mi and Park Joo-a take on dual roles as Yuan and Soo-ho’s mother, promising an even richer stage.
Following the casting news, netizens reacted: "I loved the original novel, so I’m excited for the musical," "I cried at the reading showcase—can’t wait," and "The machine-human concept is so unique."
Meanwhile, DIVE is scheduled to run from August 18 to November 8 at Link The Space Hall 1.
