Super Junior member and actor Choi Siwon has officially launched his Threads activity — and his very first post instantly drew a wave of politically charged comments, igniting fresh buzz.
On July 13, Choi opened a Threads account and wrote, “Is this Threads?” alongside a rear-view photo of himself on horseback.
The post itself contained nothing political, but comments poured in referencing his perceived politics, including “A true patriot,” “Welcome, conservative youth,” and “Thanks for speaking up.” Some users even shared images of the Taegeukgi (South Korean flag), the Stars and Stripes, and photos from political rallies.
Around the time he joined Threads, Choi also shared thoughts on South Korea’s future. “I used to think about it sometimes, but these days I find myself more often considering what this country should look like for the next generation, as one of its citizens,” he asked the public for their views. He continued, “Without the empathy and support you’ve sent me, my thoughts might have stayed as mere monologues,” adding, “Your warm encouragement has been a great comfort and strength.” He further said, “I want to keep discussing our country’s future with you and share the thoughts I’ve had so far,” promising, “I’ll listen more closely to different opinions and keep learning.”
Back in February, on the day former President Yoon Suk Yeol received his first-trial verdict, Choi posted the four-character idioms “불의필망(不義必亡), 토붕와해(土崩瓦解)” — meaning “injustice will surely perish” and “collapse like crumbling earth and shattered tiles” — on his social media, sparking intense interpretation over political meaning. Speculation tied him to Korean history instructor Jeon Han-gil, and a nighttime landscape photo some claimed was taken at a political rally site — all fueling controversy over his perceived political stance. At the same time, malicious comments and personal attacks targeting Choi’s politics, religion, and appearance continued. In response, his agency SM Entertainment announced it would take strong action against repeated insults and defamatory posts, and in May, Choi filed a damages lawsuit against 10 users behind malicious posts.
All eyes are now on what stories Choi will share as he opens direct communication with the public on a new platform.
