Same-sex relationships, once primarily depicted on OTT platforms and in independent films, are increasingly appearing in Korean television dramas.

In recent years, LGBTQ themes in TV dramas have often sparked debate. In TV Chosun’s 2023 drama 'Durian’s Affair', a storyline involving a daughter-in-law confessing her feelings to her mother-in-law drew attention and controversy. While it generated significant buzz, it also led to protests from civic groups, and the network later edited parts of the content.

By contrast, ENA’s Monday–Tuesday drama 'Climax', which concluded on April 14, approached a similar theme differently. Ha Ji-won portrayed Chu Sang-ah, a top star navigating personal and professional challenges, including a same-sex relationship. The character’s storyline included emotional developments and scenes that highlighted her relationship with Han Dong-hee, as well as a kiss and bed scene with Nana.

Viewers responded with interest to the portrayal, noting the character’s emotional arc and the performance. The drama ranked No. 1 in TV-OTT drama buzz on Good Data Corporation’s FUNdex.

Following the project, Ha Ji-won shared that the role was both physically and emotionally demanding and described it as an opportunity to explore a new side of her acting.

The differing responses to dramas like 'Durian’s Affair' and 'Climax' suggest that audience reception may depend on how such themes are presented, including narrative context and character development.
