With public interest in live performance surging, a wave of boundary-breaking musicals that erase the line between audience and stage is rolling out and captivating theatergoers.
The first buzzy title is the immersive musical Roulette, which unveiled its cast lineup on the 19th and officially kicked off promotions. Opening this July, Roulette transforms the premium black-and-gold cinema ArtieStage into its venue, delivering a refined, intimate atmosphere that stands apart from conventional proscenium-style shows.
This season marks the third lineup of Inside the Play, an immersive/experiential performance brand created in collaboration with Lotte Cultureworks, promising an even more intense sense of immersion. Based on cartoonist Oh Min-hyuk’s short-story webtoon — Roulette — the musical follows Do-il, a drifter on the streets, whose life is upended when a millionaire named Poe appears claiming to be his twin brother and proposes a perilous, high-stakes game for wealth and life.
The standout feature of this run of Roulette is that the premium movie theater is completely reborn as Poe’s grand mansion. Leveraging ArtieStage Dogok’s massive screen and thunderous cinematic sound system, the production cranks up the tension to the max.
The pre-show, which begins 30 minutes before curtain, is Roulette’s signature experience. Guests become partygoers at the mansion, interact directly with the cast, place bets on dares, and can even alter the ending themselves based on the outcomes — a truly hands-on theatrical adventure.
Preceding it, the audience-participation club musical Club Seolhwa (Club 설화), which opened on the 14th, is also spreading by word of mouth as a similarly interactive, out-of-the-box experience. Staged like a pulsing nightclub where music, dance, and acting collide, the show is designed so the audience doesn’t just watch — they jump in to vote and play. Because audience movement, choices, and real-time voting are reflected immediately, every single performance unfolds in a completely different way.
Club Seolhwa begins with a one-of-a-kind universe that reimagines traditional Korean folktales inside a modern club. Set at the Jade Emperor’s ‘Grievance Games,’ legendary figures from Korean lore gather in one place to unleash their pent-up stories through hip, hard-hitting performances.
Audience members listen to these tales and vote to crown the ‘Most Wronged,’ a decisive choice that functions as the key device determining that night’s final ending.
By boldly tearing down the wall between stage and seats, Roulette and Club Seolhwa deliver an unprecedented spectacle where the audience helps complete the narrative — a fresh paradigm shaking up the theater scene.
