Actor Jang Dong-joo, who shocked fans with a sudden retirement announcement, resurfaced via a live broadcast on SNS to share an update—and assured viewers he’s focused on repaying his debts.
On June 6, Jang hosted a real-time live on his TikTok, chatting with fans much like usual. He appeared calm throughout the conversation, and the hand that previously caused concern looked fine.
Last month, Jang declared on SNS, “As of today, I’m stepping away from life as actor Jang Dong-joo,” effectively announcing his retirement. He then escalated concern by posting a video that seemed to show him attempting to injure part of his body.
Explaining the reason behind his decision, Jang cited debt issues. He previously claimed he had incurred massive debts due to a hacked phone. During the live, he said, “I’m living. I have a lot of debt.” He added that with help from family and acquaintances, he had repaid over KRW 3 billion out of roughly KRW 4 billion, leaving about KRW 700–800 million outstanding.
Jang said he is “working to repay all remaining debt.” However, he decided to retire because ongoing pressure and threats from creditors made it difficult to continue normal acting activities. Notably, the retirement announcement was made without prior consultation with his agency. Jang had signed an exclusive contract with Management W in February this year.
In an official statement, Management W said, “Jang Dong-joo’s retirement announcement was made unilaterally without any prior discussion or consultation with the company.” They added, “As an actor currently under contract, he has engaged in irresponsible behavior that betrays responsibility and trust. The confusion and damage caused are his responsibility,” stressing that the company will carefully review related matters, including whether to maintain the exclusive contract.
Following his retirement declaration and the shocking SNS posts, Jang’s decision to go live eased some fans’ concerns. Still, questions remain over his debt situation, his contract with the agency, and whether he will continue his acting career.
