In a move shocking the industry, the Grammys have launched a brand-new category embracing K-pop under the wider Asian pop umbrella.

ABC reported on the 16th (local time) that the 2027 Grammy Awards will add five categories: "Best Asian Pop Music Performance," "Best Latin Song," "Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance," "Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance," and "Best Traditional Folk Album."

Among them, "Best Asian Pop Music Performance" is drawing the most attention. BTS and BLACKPINK’s Rosé have repeatedly vied for a main Grammy only to fall short, sparking ongoing debate. With this overhaul, many believe K-pop acts are now one big step closer to finally taking home a trophy.

The "Best Asian Pop Music Performance" category is designed to honor the artistic excellence of Asian pop that meaningfully uses one or more Asian languages and originates from or is recognized within Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop (Japanese pop), and C-pop (Chinese pop).

The Recording Academy explained the new addition recognizes the growing global influence of Asian pop across the music industry.

Earlier this year, the original soundtrack track "Golden" from the Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters became the first Grammy winner for the K-pop genre.

Meanwhile, the 69th Annual Grammy Awards, where the new rules take effect, is scheduled for February 7 next year.
