Mark, formerly of the group NCT, apologized after a racism controversy erupted over his wearing a T-shirt featuring the Confederate flag.

His agency Upperroom wrote on its official Instagram on the 23rd, "We sincerely apologize for causing concern, discomfort, and disappointment to many due to the vintage T-shirt that appeared in recently released photos."

The Confederate flag printed on the shirt Mark wore is known as a symbol of white supremacy and racism, as it was the flag of the Confederate States that supported slavery during the U.S. Civil War. The agency explained, "The item was chosen simply because it was vintage," adding, "Once we recognized the historical meaning and sensitivity of the symbol on the T-shirt, we took steps to ensure it would not appear in official content." They continued, "Nevertheless, the image was shared externally, exposing the symbol and raising public concern."

Upperroom and Mark said, "Regardless of intent, we should have exercised greater caution and care," promising to strengthen their wardrobe selection and content review procedures to prevent similar incidents. They emphasized, "Upperroom and the artist stand firmly against racism, hate, discrimination, and any form of exclusion or bigotry," and added, "We deeply apologize for the hurt and pain this incident has caused many people."

Mark debuted with NCT in 2016 and played a central role across several sub-units, including NCT 127 and NCT Dream. He left NCT in April when his contract with SM Entertainment ended, and earlier this month launched his independent label, Upperroom.
