Shocking new backlash erupted as KATSEYE addressed Manon’s absence in a high-profile interview, while her surprise Fashion Week appearances during hiatus split opinion online and reignited a divisive debate.
On June 30 (local time), U.S. outlet Vanity Fair published an interview with KATSEYE. Five members participated, excluding Manon.
Asked whether they were still in contact with Manon, the members answered briefly, “From time to time.” Lara said, “Our safest space is within the six of us,” adding, “People have no idea what’s happening between us. There’s only love among us,” emphasizing the team’s unity.
The flashpoint was Sofia’s remark. Sofia stated, “I can say clearly that our situation was never about race,” adding, “That would go against everything we stand for.” The members also addressed Manon attending Coachella this year as a spectator rather than joining KATSEYE’s stage, saying, “We’re really happy Manon gets to enjoy those things.”
Sofia’s comment drew major backlash from some fans. Critics argued the members seemed to downplay or deny the experiences Manon had hinted at. Others countered that being a woman of color does not preclude reproducing anti-Black sentiment, further stoking the controversy.
The Manon controversy began in February when HYBE announced she would pause activities. HYBE said at the time, “Manon is halting activities to focus on her health and well-being.” However, Manon immediately posted on her social media, “I’m healthy and fine. I’m taking good care of myself,” adding, “Sometimes things unfold in ways we can’t fully control, but I believe in the bigger picture,” prompting widespread speculation. It later emerged that she had liked a post discussing racism faced by Black members in Western girl groups. The post included the KATSEYE hashtag, and fans noted Manon followed artists who have spoken publicly about racism, fueling multiple interpretations.
Meanwhile, Manon’s recent public appearances also became fodder. Though on hiatus, she attended a luxury brand event and showed up at Fashion Week. International fans welcomed her appearance, but on some Korean online communities, critics said, “She skips group schedules but handles personal ones,” questioning how her stance affects team activities and even raising the prospect of her departure.
With the reasons for Manon’s hiatus, the members’ interview comments, her social media activity, and public appearances all intersecting, the controversy around KATSEYE is growing more complex. Fans are split between those who say the criticism of Manon has gone too far and those calling for a clearer explanation about group activities.
