Director Na Hong-jins new film Hope stormed the Cannes Film Festival with its world premiere and an international trailer drop, cementing its status as this summers most anticipated release. Set around Hopo Port near the Demilitarized Zone, Hope follows the chaos unleashed when an unidentified presence appears. The film was invited to the Competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival and had its first screening on the 17th (local time) at the Grand The9e2tre Lumie8re in Cannes, France.
The newly released trailer spotlights the pandemonium at Hopo Port after a mysterious attack. Officer Seong-ae (Jung Ho-yeon) steps out of a patrol car stalled in the middle of the road, and branch office chief Beom-seok (Hwang Jung-min) faces the devastating aftermath f ratcheting up a foreboding sense of dread. Villager Seong-gi (Zo In-sung) and the townspeople then come face-to-face with the entity that has descended upon them, fighting tooth and nail to stop it.
The standout hallmark of the footage is its genre intensity. Rapid-fire car chases, shootouts, forest pursuits, and evasive moves on horseback unfold in quick succession, merging Na Hong-jins signature unsettling atmosphere with large-scale sci-fi spectacle. The shrouded alien character also makes its first appearance in this trailer. It was realized through motion-capture and facial-capture performances by Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.
Early reactions on site were electric. Hope ran approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, and audiences stayed in their seats past midnight to witness the world premiere. After the screening, a standing ovation of about seven minutes erupted, and Na Hong-jin personally thanked viewers for staying with the film.
Global interest is surging as well. Hope is the first Korean film in Competition in four years, following 2022s Decision to Leave and Broker, and it marks Na Hong-jins first Competition entry. With this, Na continues his streak of bringing all his features f The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing f to Cannes.
With its Cannes debut, the first reveal of the alien, and an overwhelming international trailer all landing at once, expectations have skyrocketed. Attention is now on whether a project that pits Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon against a lineup of global stars in the same frame will add another searing chapter to Na Hong-jins filmography.
