Shocking casting update: On May 18, agency Just Entertainment confirmed, "Seo Hyun-woo will appear in The Roundup 5," signaling his move into the fifth installment of the hit crime-action The Outlaws franchise led by Ma Dong-seok.

The The Outlaws series follows monster detective Ma Seok-do (played by Ma Dong-seok) as he takes down criminal organizations, and it has become Korea's signature action franchise. Since the first film in 2017, it has been a consistent box-office force, with The Roundup (12.69 million admissions), The Roundup: No Way Out (10.68 million), and The Roundup: Punishment (11.5 million) each surpassing the 10-million mark to achieve a rare "triple 10-million" feat.

Still, some viewers had voiced fatigue over repeated setups and action formulas, prompting the series to take a brief reset. After roughly a two-year gap, anticipation is spiking over what changes The Roundup 5 will bring — and Seo Hyun-woo, known for his rock-solid acting, is being hailed as the wildcard that could refresh the franchise.

Debuting in 2010 with the musical The Harmonium in My Memory, Seo has made his mark in major films including The Front Line, The Face Reader, A Hard Day, Veteran, A Taxi Driver, 1987: When the Day Comes, Believer, The Man Standing Next, and Decision to Leave. On television, he has earned a reputation as a "trustworthy actor" with versatile performances across genres in My Mister, Flower of Evil, Behind Every Star, A Shop for Killers, Uncle Samsik, and The Fiery Priest 2.

Most recently, he delivered chilling villain turns in the dramas Honour and Climax, successfully reinventing himself yet again. Expectations are high that he will anchor the narrative in The Roundup 5 as well.

All eyes are on whether The Roundup 5, now balancing commercial appeal and artistic ambitions, can smash the franchise's ceiling with the new addition of Seo Hyun-woo.
