Jeon Somi got candid about the crushing pressure and fierce rivalry she faced on past audition programs — and shared raw feelings about I.O.I’s long-awaited reunion finally coming together after 10 years.
On the May 18 episode of the web variety show Zzanbro, I.O.I members Jeon Somi, Chungha, Choi Yoojung, and Yoo Yeonjung appeared to look back on their promotions and reveal behind-the-scenes stories.
Recalling her time on Mnet’s Produce 101, Jeon Somi admitted, "At the very first shoot with 101 contestants, the pressure was so intense I wanted my mom." Entering last, she remembered, "When countless eyes all focused on me at once, the pressure was overwhelming." Because she had already become known through Mnet’s SIXTEEN, she also shared that some trainees kept her in check. "Since I joined with some name recognition, I had a bit of a target on my back," she said, laying bare her mindset at the time.
The relentless competition that continued right up to debut also left its mark. Speaking on her dynamic with Kim Sejeong, who battled her for the top spot, she said, "Because I kept subconsciously paying attention, things suddenly became awkward." She added, "After debut, being told we were suddenly one team made it hard to sort out my emotions."
But with time, her affection for the members only deepened. On I.O.I’s reunion, Jeon Somi confessed, "If we hadn’t met again this time, it would’ve haunted me for life," adding, "The longing was so strong, I felt like I couldn’t move on even as a soul."
The preparation for the reunion was just as meaningful. The members revealed they were often moved to tears during practice, overwhelmed by the emotions that welled up, and they expressed gratitude and exhilaration over reuniting after such a long wait.
