Actress Son Tae-young candidly opened up about her struggles with English while living in the United States.
On May 31, a video showing Son Tae-young's daily life in America was uploaded to her YouTube channel. In the clip, Son met her longtime English teacher for a meal and caught up on life.
During the video, Son gifted a homemade mille-feuille meal kit to a friend and enjoyed a warm reunion. Her English teacher said, "I prepared customized English sentence materials for you," adding, "I pulled about 500 sentences you need. English really isn't easy, and you don't improve quickly. Still, you have to keep using it."
Son agreed that frequent use is important but admitted, "There are so many Koreans in the New Jersey community that you can get by without using English."
However, she noted that English is essential for school and parent gatherings. "When I go to the kids' school or meet other parents, I need English. It's good to study in advance, but the problem is I'm not improving. I think it's because I don't use it," she said, voicing a real concern.
Her teacher joked, "The only way to get good at English is dating. You learn it through a relationship." Son laughed, replying, "Maybe in my next life." She then added playfully, "If my future daughter-in-law or son-in-law is a foreigner, I shouldn't meet them. I'll have to say, 'Daughter-in-law, don't come,'" drawing laughs.
Son married actor Kwon Sang-woo in 2008, and they have one son and one daughter. Since 2019, she has been living in New Jersey for her children's education, while Kwon travels between Korea and the United States for work.
