Actors Kang Dong-won, Um Tae-goo, Park Ji-hyun, and Oh Jung-se teamed up for the film Wild Sing, but the box office impact isn’t matching the buzz. As of the 22nd, the movie has surpassed 1.1 million admissions. It’s not a total flop, but given the star-studded cast, pre-release hype, and viral in-movie music, many say it’s “quieter than expected.”

Wild Sing is a comedy about Triangle, a once-dominant co-ed idol group that disbanded after an unexpected incident, fighting for a comeback 20 years later. Ahead of release, Kang Dong-won’s all-out breakdancing and Um Tae-goo’s drastic transformation fueled sky-high expectations. On paper, it’s crowd-pleasing—retro vibes, music, and comedy rolled into one. In fact, Choi Sung-gon’s track ‘I Like You,’ performed by Oh Jung-se, spread online through challenges and memes, generating major buzz outside theaters.

But that buzz didn’t immediately convert into ticket sales. One major reason is the competition. When it opened, director Yeon Sang-ho’s zombie film Colony was already dominating theaters. With Colony absorbing the box office up top and Toy Story 5 joining the fray, families and general audiences had wider choices. Comedies can leg out with strong word of mouth, but if they lose the early spotlight, it’s hard to build momentum.

Another factor is the genre blur. Wild Sing is a music film, a comedy, and a comeback story steeped in nostalgia. That can be a strength—but the flip side is that it’s tough to sell in a single line. When audiences decide to head to the theater, they want a crystal-clear picture of “what they’re about to watch.” The cathartic action of The Outlaws and the zombie suspense of Colony's zombie suspense are straightforward genre promises, but Wild Sing pushes laughs, music, and throwback feels all at once, diluting its target.

The imbalance in character reception also stings. Online, Oh Jung-se’s Choi Sung-gon has been cited far more than Kang Dong-won and Um Tae-goo’s idol transformations. That’s a positive signal, but it also means a specific character and song are being consumed more than the film as a whole. Saying “I want to see Oh Jung-se” is different from “I need to go to the theater to watch the entire movie.” Memes spread fast, but to turn into ticket sales, there has to be anticipation for the full story.

Wild Sing’s shortfall isn’t about lacking charm—it’s that its charms got scattered instead of crystallizing into box office power. The ingredients were rich: star casting, retro tunes, comedy, and Oh Jung-se’s show-stealing character. But today’s theatrical market demands sharper genre identity, stronger word of mouth, and faster viral conversion. Wild Sing brings laughs and spectacle, but the decisive knockout punch that drags audiences into theaters landed softer than expected.

In this climate, the remaining X factor is word of mouth. If Choi Sung-gon’s ‘I Like You’ can jump from online craze to real theater attendance, that may decide the film’s final score.

Meanwhile, Wild Sing’s break-even point is reportedly around 2 million admissions. All eyes are on whether a film that crossed 1 million viewers in 18 days can ultimately break even.
