BLACKPINK’s Lisa set the internet ablaze after a recent interview sparked a divisive debate over whether her “foreign language” remarks were taking aim at fellow member Jisoo.
The controversy began on the 24th when Lisa appeared on global magazine Vanity Fair’s YouTube channel for a lie detector test segment.
In the video, the host asked Lisa about her ability to speak multiple languages. After noting that she speaks three languages, the host asked, “Do you think people who can only speak one language are lazy?” Lisa immediately replied, “No, I don’t.”
However, the lie detector registered her answer as false. Joking around, the host then asked Lisa to look into the camera and “tell viewers to get up and start learning a second language.” Lisa burst into laughter and said, “Learning a second language is more helpful.”
The clip spread quickly across social media. While many fans loved seeing Lisa adorably fail at lying, some began to speculate that her comments were a subtle jab at Jisoo, who is widely known as the most fluent Korean speaker in the group — suggesting Lisa had effectively called Jisoo “lazy.”
BLACKPINK fans rushed to defend both. Lisa’s fans argued, “It was just a humorous moment during an interview,” adding that bringing Jisoo into it was unnecessary. Jisoo’s fans countered that “Jisoo can speak and understand a fair amount of English,” warning against overinterpretation.
Meanwhile, Lisa and Jisoo debuted in BLACKPINK alongside Jennie and Rosé. All four are now pursuing active solo endeavors in music, acting, and more.
