Once known as an SM Entertainment trainee, Gong Seung-yeon has cemented herself as an actress with serious chops — and she’s commanding attention on the small screen right now.

Gong stars in MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown (hereafter 'Perfect Crown') as Yoon I-rang, a pivotal figure who drives the central storyline alongside Seong Hee-ju (played by IU) and Grand Prince Ian (Byun Woo-seok). According to ratings agency Nielsen Korea, episode 4 of 'Perfect Crown,' which aired on the 18th, surged to double-digit ratings just four episodes in, keeping the show’s red-hot momentum.

In the series, Yoon I-rang is the key player who closely monitors factions that threaten the royal balance, injecting palpable tension into every scene. Transforming her image with this role, Gong portrays the Dowager Yoon I-rang — from a prestigious family that has produced queens for four generations — with her signature controlled diction and chilling gaze, crafting a convincingly multi-dimensional character.

In particular, the scene in the premiere where she fiercely warns Grand Prince Ian — even slapping him — to protect her son Lee Yoon (Kim Eun-ho) was downright electrifying. It simultaneously revealed Yoon I-rang’s inner anxiety, obsession, and desperate will to hold on to power, leaving a powerful impression on viewers. Her resolute expression and cold composure while facing off against Grand Prince Ian sharpened the show’s central conflict. As public sentiment tilted toward Grand Prince Ian, Gong nuanced the character’s shaken resolve and the tangled emotions of a mother looking at her still-young son, pulling viewers even deeper into the story.

After the broadcast, viewers raved, saying, "Her voice is perfect for historical dramas," "You get completely absorbed in the character," and "This was a brilliant choice for her career."

Riding high on its gripping plot, 'Perfect Crown' airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 p.m.
