The film Colony seized the Buddha’s Birthday holiday box office, delivering a powerhouse showing that dominated theaters.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing database on the 26th, Colony drew 1,800,354 moviegoers between May 22 and 25, holding the No. 1 spot at the box office since its release.
Colony started with 230,047 admissions on the 22nd, then jumped to 475,788 on the 23rd and 577,508 on the 24th. Even on the final day of the long weekend (the 25th), it added 517,011 viewers, pushing its cumulative total to 2,018,644 and blasting past the 2 million mark in just five days. Among Korean films released this year, only The King’s Warden and Salmokji have also crossed 2 million.
Colony follows a group of isolated survivors trapped inside a building locked down by a mysterious outbreak as they battle infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways. It’s the latest from director Sang-ho Yeon of Train to Busan and Peninsula, starring Ji-hyun Jun, Kyo-hwan Koo, Chang-wook Ji, Hyun-been Shin, Shin-rok Kim, and Soo Go, who deliver gripping performances and relentless suspense.
Colony was officially invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, earning recognition for its craftsmanship. With its holiday streak turning heads, all eyes are on how much farther it can run at the box office.
