Singer Lee Hyori offered blunt, real-world advice on the hot-button issue of communication in relationships — and it’s going viral.
On the June 23 broadcast of JTBC variety show Love War, first guest Girls' Generation member Yuri joined Lee Hyori, Seo Jang-hoon, and Kim Hee-chul to weigh in on a couple on the brink of breaking up.
The episode spotlighted Lee Seon-jae, a fitness trainer based in Samseong-dong, and his girlfriend Yoo Chae-rin, a news anchor who is four years older. In their daily-life footage, Lee was seen not checking his girlfriend’s messages during work while replying to others.
Seeing this, Seo Jang-hoon argued that the job context should come first. He said, "When your work involves dealing with clients, it can be hard to reply," showing some understanding for Lee.
But Lee Hyori disagreed. She pointed out, "If you truly have no time to even look, that’s one thing. But seeing it and not replying feels bad." She drew a clear line between being too busy to text and choosing not to respond after reading the message.
Lee also suggested that men and women may have different standards for what counts as "urgent." She analyzed, "For a man, something urgent might be a fire or a major accident. For a woman, what’s 'urgent' can be the moment her heart feels heavy and lonely." She added, "In that moment, a single word from you is what she urgently needs."
She further explained that even a message like "Did you get to work okay?" isn’t just small talk. "The wording may look that way, but it really means, 'Please think of me for a moment,'" she said, stressing the importance of emotional connection.
In the end, Lee Hyori emphasized attitude over frequency. Even without a long reply, recognizing your partner’s feelings and responding briefly can be crucial to keeping the relationship intact.
After the show aired, viewers reacted online: "Lee Hyori’s take is realistic," "We’re not asking for long texts — we just want to feel your heart," and "She nailed the most disappointing moment in dating."
