Shocking stage comeback: Actress Sooyoung Choi will return to theater after three years, leading Shakespeare’s signature comedy The Merchant of Venice at the National Theater of Korea from July 8 to August 9.

On the 22nd, her agency Saram Entertainment announced that Sooyoung Choi has confirmed her appearance in the Park Company-produced play The Merchant of Venice.

The production is already drawing major buzz with a star-studded cast that spans generations—veteran legends Shin Goo and Park Geun-hyung, alongside Sooyoung Choi, Lee Seung-ju, Kai, Won Jin-a, Kim Seul-gi, and Kim Ah-young—building sky-high expectations even before opening night.

In The Merchant of Venice, Sooyoung Choi takes the stage as Portia, the heiress of Belmont. A brilliant character armed with wit and wisdom, Portia drives the romance with the Venetian noble Bassanio while holding the crucial key to resolving the courtroom conflict—sharpening the play’s central themes.

Following the 2023 play Wife, Sooyoung Choi’s return to live theater with The Merchant of Venice will run from July 8 to August 9 at the National Theater of Korea’s Haeoreum Grand Theater.
