Actress Jun Ji-hyun openly revealed why she stays off social media, candidly sharing her conviction-driven way of working.
On the 26th, during a promotional interview for the film Colony, Jun explained why she doesn’t run any personal social accounts: “I’m afraid I’ll make a mistake” — a simple yet crystal-clear reason. She added, “I’ve been active since I was young, but I’m neither used to nor comfortable with exposing myself,” and, “I don’t think I need to force myself to be.”
While it’s become standard in entertainment to share daily life through social media or YouTube, Jun has stayed unfazed by the shift. “Friends these days may be used to it, but I’m not,” she drew a line. “Some people are well-suited to showing that side, and some aren’t.” On doing YouTube, she added, “I’m not confident. I’d rather stick to what I do well,” clearly marking her boundaries.
She also spoke frankly about the burden of revealing personal stories. “Talking about myself doesn’t feel comfortable,” she said. “I’m here to promote my work, and I don’t think it’s right when the focus shifts to my private life.” Regarding her recent appearance on the web variety show Just an Excuse, she explained, “It came out naturally thanks to Yoo Jae-suk’s easygoing hosting.”
Returning to the big screen with Colony after a long time, Jun shared thoughts on today’s changed promotional landscape. Noting that promotion now revolves around YouTube and social media unlike in the past, she said, “I felt how much the times have changed,” while holding fast to her own approach of keeping the focus on the work.
Jun also emphasized her growth as an actor: “I’ve learned and grown through my characters.” Citing her recent roles, she said, “I want to meet characters I can play precisely at this age,” raising expectations for what’s next.
Meanwhile, Colony, starring Jun Ji-hyun, opened on the 21st. The film follows isolated survivors inside a locked-down building during a mysterious outbreak as they face off against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways.
