A man in his 30s who was sent to trial for allegedly breaking into the home of actress Nana, formerly of the group After School, said he plans to submit additional materials ahead of sentencing.
On the 4th, the 1st Criminal Division of the Namyangju branch of the Uijeongbu District Court held a hearing for A, a man in his 30s indicted on charges of robbery causing injury. The court had closed arguments last month but reopened them before sentencing.
A is accused of breaking into Nana's residence in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, in November last year, threatening Nana and her mother, and attempting to steal valuables. Prosecutors say A entered with a weapon, assaulted and threatened Nana's mother, and therefore charged him with robbery causing injury.
At last month's sentencing hearing, prosecutors sought a 10-year prison term, saying, "The crime is grave, he shows no remorse, and he has not reached a settlement with the victims." In contrast, A's side argues there was no intent to commit robbery. A's attorney said, "We acknowledge entering the residence at night, but it was for theft, not violent robbery," adding, "There is no objective evidence that the defendant carried a weapon when he entered."
In his final statement, A also said, "I admit trespassing and attempting theft, but I did not commit a robbery." He still addressed the victims, saying, "I sincerely apologize to those who were harmed by my wrongdoing. I will never commit a crime again."
Even during the additional arguments, A repeated his stance. In particular, he reportedly told the court, "I obtained a medical opinion stating I was cut by a knife by more than 5 cm," and said he would submit it as additional evidence.
At the time of the incident, A also filed a complaint claiming he was injured by Nana's side. However, police determined the injury occurred while Nana was subduing A and constituted legitimate self-defense, and therefore decided not to forward the case. Nana later countersued A for false accusation, saying he had filed a complaint containing false information.
Meanwhile, A's sentencing hearing is scheduled for the 9th.
