Shocking reminder of past cruelty: Model-turned TV personality Hong Jin-kyung opened up about the brutal backlash and hate Jung Sun-hee faced, revealing her heartbreak and anger over how the public targeted her friend at her most vulnerable.
On the 18th, Hong Jin-kyung uploaded a video to her YouTube channel showing a candid dinner with close friends, including comedian Jung Sun-hee, where they shared deeply personal stories.
While discussing hate comments and the public gaze, Hong Jin-kyung brought up the pain Jung Sun-hee suffered in the past. "Unni went through something unimaginably painful, but strangely, people attacked the one who was hurting," she began.
She continued, "She didn’t do anything to deserve that kind of hate. But when your life suddenly collapses and you’re also hit with inexplicable abuse, you retreat—like a snail pulling back into its shell."
Hong Jin-kyung admitted she felt powerless watching Jung Sun-hee up close. "No matter how hard I tried to pull her out, I couldn’t," she said. Jung Sun-hee responded, "But you came to pull me out all the time," expressing gratitude to Hong for never giving up on her.
Jung Sun-hee married the late actor Ahn Jae-hwan in 2007 but was widowed the following year. After his death, she suffered greatly due to baseless rumors and a wave of malicious comments. At the time, some netizens spread unverified suspicions about the timing of the missing-person report and alleged financial issues, forcing Jung to endure a barrage of blame and a witch hunt even as she mourned her husband.
